Large calves that lack definition may be caused by overdeveloped muscles, but for many women, the cause is fat accumulation. No matter how hard you exercise or how diligently you diet, you will not be able to rid yourself of excess fat in this area. If you are looking for calf reduction, you may want to consider liposuction at The Woodlands offices of Dr. Bryan Correa. Sculpting the lower leg can be done on the calves alone or as part of a complete lower leg rejuvenation which includes the ankles and inner knees. A slender calf and ankle can be in your future more easily than you might think.
How does calf liposuction work
Thick calves and ankles can be caused by overall accumulations of fat or pockets of fat around the ankle creating a straight profile. The more aesthetic curved profile of the leg can be regained by skillfully removing fat from precise locations. Calf liposuction is a popular procedure sought by women. The results are long-lasting and recovery time is well-tolerated. If you avoid wearing skirts or dresses because you are sensitive about the shape of your lower legs, consider receiving calf liposuction from Dr. Correa.
Calf liposuction procedure
Modern liposuction methods have greatly reduced the discomfort and recovery time that patients were once exposed to. Dr. Correa will determine the best liposuction method after examining your legs as there are several choices depending on how the fat is distributed.
Prior to the procedure a diluted anesthetic solution containing lidocaine and epinephrine is injected into the area which both numbs the area and reduces bleeding.
A very tiny incision is then made at the bottom of the leg and a small tube, called a cannula is inserted. The cannula is gently moved back and forth and the fat is suctioned out of the areas treated and the procedure is complete. This is repeated with each of the areas needing reduction.

The incision sites will drain for a few days to allow any residual fluid to be drained. This reduces the swelling that will be present for a few weeks, as well as bruising. You will need to wear compression stockings to help the skin adhere to the underlying tissue and to minimize swelling. You should be able to return to work after 5-7 days, depending on the demands of your job. You will be given pain medication to ensure you are comfortable during your recovery. Walking will help your circulation and decrease the possibility of clot formation. You should avoid strenuous activity for about 4 weeks following your procedure, but you can resume light activities within a week or so. Dr. Correa will give you complete post-treatment instructions when you leave. You of course can call our office at any time to ask questions.
