Breast Augmentation, Breast Lift, or Both?
Considering breast augmentation?
While the majority of women who consult Dr. Bryan Correa for breast surgery are interested in increasing their size or fullness using breast implants, there are many other reasons that motivate women to have this procedure.
Reasons for breast implants:
- Asymmetrical breasts
- Loss of breast volume due to aging, massive weight loss, or breastfeeding
- Breast cancer reconstruction after treatment
- Revising or repairing previous breast surgeries
- Balancing breasts of different size

Why Consider a Breast Lift?
The overall goal of any cosmetic breast surgery is to achieve beautiful natural looking breasts that create a balanced appearance. Receiving a breast lift from Dr. Correa may be helpful in giving you a balanced appearance. A breast lift might be right for you if you have:
- Sagging breasts that lack volume
- Breasts that are flat or hollow at the top
- Breasts that are asymmetrical – one breast lower than the other
- Nipples that fall below the fold of the breast or are pointing downward
- Enlarged areolas
Although in a standard breast lift no breast tissue is removed, often due to their new position they appear slightly smaller and often require a smaller bra size after surgery. If volume is a concern, then during the breast lift surgery breast implants can be used to provide more volume. Alternatively, if you prefer a slight reduction in the size of your breasts, breast lift surgery can accomplish this by removing some of the breast tissue.
What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure used to increase the size of the breast or to correct the shape and symmetry of the breasts. There are three main decisions to be made concerning the procedure. Houston based plastic surgeon Dr. Bryan Correa believes that the method chosen is unique to each patient and depends on many factors. He uses silicone or saline implants or a technique called fat transfer to achieve the look that his patients desire.
Breast implants have recently taken a second position to the fat transfer technique due to the fact that the material used in fat transfer is the patient’s own fat tissue. Many women feel this is a safer alternative to silicone or saline implants, although Dr. Correa counsels that modern implants have a perfect health record. Fat transfer is not for every woman. This technique is most effective for women who do not want a dramatic increase in size, or who have only one breast needing augmentation and would rather not have an implant that will require future maintenance. The secondary benefit to the fat transfer technique is removing excess fatty tissue from an area of the body-something that most patients find very beneficial.
After choosing the size and type of augmentation, the next decision is the location of the implant. Dr. Correa will recommend the best placement of the implant, either under the pectoral muscle, or behind the mammary gland. In the case of a fat transfer technique, the location of the harvested fat tissue will be discussed. All choices are dependent on unique physical characteristics, and Dr. Correa will explain the reason for his choice in detail. The incision site is then determined based on implant size and patient preference. Most of Dr. Correa’s breast augmentation procedures are done through an incision under the breast, making the scar all but invisible after they are healed.
What is a Breast Lift?
More and more women in the Houston area are choosing to have a breast lift to counter the inevitable effects of aging, gravity, and childbirth. If you are satisfied with the size of your breasts but are not happy with their position on your chest, a breast lift might be all you need to regain your youthful silhouette.
Combined Breast Lift and Augmentation
Dr. Correa will review all of the options available once he has a clear understanding of what you are trying to achieve from breast lift surgery. His goal is to give you the best breast lift possible, with the exact results you are looking for. For many women, a breast lift may not produce the shape or volume that they anticipate. In women with very flat and/or pendulous breasts, or patients with small breasts that have started to flatten and droop, a breast lift alone will not produce the firm bust line they are seeking. In these cases, breast augmentation with implant placement can be done during the surgery, giving a better long-term outcome.
Are you a good candidate?
Good candidates for breast augmentation are women who are generally healthy, have a personal desire to change the shape of their breasts and have a realistic goal concerning the outcome of their breast surgery. Most women considering this type of surgery have a dissatisfaction with the balance of their bosom-to-body ratio and wish to correct it. There are some health conditions that might prevent a woman from this or any elective surgery. Women should meet with Dr. Correa to discuss any of these concerning conditions. Young women who have not fully matured should wait at least until they are 18 or until their breast size has stabilized prior to considering breast implant surgery. If you have interest in getting a breast implant surgery, but have questions or concerns, please give Dr. Correa a call or read on for more information.
Types of breast implants
There are various types of implants being used in breast augmentation surgery. The primary variables are the type of material (silicone or saline), the shape of the implant (round or ‘anatomic’), and the texture of the shell (smooth or rough). Each of these breast implants was created for a reason and therefore they each have their own set of positive and negative attributes. This is why a consultation with a fully trained plastic surgeon is necessary, as identifying the appropriate implant to reach your individual goals requires an astute listener as well as experience and artistic judgement to determine which device will best accomplish your goals. A thorough consultation with a trained surgeon will ensure that you are well-informed and confident in your choice of implant, so as to help you attain the best results in breast augmentation. The most common implants are:
Composed of sterile saline solution. If the implant shell ruptures, saline solution is absorbed by the body and naturally expelled.
These feel more natural and should there be a rupture of the shell, the silicone stays in place to a great degree.
Form-stable silicone “Gummy bear” implants
Thicker than silicone, the gel in these implants will remain in place in the event of a rupture.
These implants are designed so that if any rotation occurs, the breast maintains the same shape.
These implants come in a variety of shapes and sizes and are designed to hold a specific shape and position to create a particular shape to the breast; therefore they are meant to avoid rotation. All anatomic implants are textured for this reason (see below).
These implants are designed to have some movement which generally makes them appear more natural than other implants.
The rough outer texture of these implants creates a Velcro-like surface for the body to stick to, which prevents rotation and movement. All anatomic implants are textured, but round implants can be textured or smooth.
Fat transfer augmentation
This procedure removes fat from another area of the patient’s body by liposuction and transfers it to the breast. This is commonly done in breast reconstruction, however, for a purely cosmetic augmentation this procedure is controversial and should only be undertaken in select cases under select circumstances.
If you’re looking for amazing results with breast implants, it’s important to find a top breast augmentation surgeon, one who will give you all the information you need to make the best choice. You should be aware of the differences in these breast implants and the long term effects connected with each one. Depending on the type of implant chosen, there are different recommendations for monitoring the breast implant, such as regular physical exams or MRIs.
