What is Breast Asymmetry Correction?
Women who have a noticeable difference in the size of their breasts do not have to go through life wearing baggy T-shirts or being afraid to participate in sports or other activities. Breast asymmetry correction surgery is a long-lasting solution focused on restoring balance and a pleasing feminine profile that enhances a woman’s self-esteem and confidence.

Why Are My Breasts So Different In Appearance?
There are slight differences in breast size and position on every woman. These are not noticeable and do not cause emotional stress. For women who have mismatched breasts, the emotional stress can be severe.
For a number of women, the differences begin to be seen during puberty where one breast develops at a different rate or stops completely. For others, breast asymmetry can occur after pregnancy or as a result of hormonal changes. Another cause is trauma to the chest or in some cases, spinal diseases such as scoliosis.
Whatever the cause, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryan Correa routinely helps women with this issue through a tailor-made surgical plan called breast asymmetry correction. Women with this issue do not have to learn to live with uneven breasts.
Benefits of Breast Asymmetry Correction
The definition of breast asymmetry is the condition of having a distinct difference in the breasts. Women who have to deal with this condition have found they can’t find a bra that fits properly, having to buy the size that fits the larger breast and padding the other cup. Breast asymmetry also makes it difficult to wear a swimsuit, evening wear or halter tops.
Correcting the problem, whether it is volume, position or a combination of both opens up a whole new world of shopping possibilities which then allow for participation in activities which were formerly avoided.
In many cases, women have avoided intimate relationships due to embarrassment over asymmetric breasts. Emotional stress is a big factor in women with breast symmetry issues and correcting these is a great relief to them.
The greatest benefit is in the boost of self-confidence and self-esteem that is experienced by Dr. Correa’s patients. Being able to confidently wear a swimsuit, or to go to the gym or a yoga class greatly increases the quality of life for those who have restricted their activities because of uneven breasts.
Candidates for Breast Asymmetry Correction
Cosmetic surgery is an elective procedure and patients who are considering a surgical correction should first and foremost be in good health. Good candidates would not have any medical conditions that could impair healing or cause complications while under anesthesia. Some of these conditions are diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, and certain blood disorders.
Candidates should also not smoke, or if they do, they should be willing to give it up for the recommended period which is usually 4 weeks before and after surgery. Dr. Correa understands this is hard for some patients, however, there can be serious complications in healing due to the fact that nicotine impairs circulation on a microscopic level which can result in the need for revision surgery.
Women who have difficulty purchasing form-fitting garments, particularly bras, swimsuits, supportive exercise bras or evening wear would be candidates for corrective surgery.
If you avoid sports activities, avoid going to the beach or have emotional stress due to uneven breasts, you are a good candidate for breast asymmetry correction.
In some cases, the difference in size and position of the breasts is so dramatic that insurance may cover the costs because it is deemed a disfiguring condition. Our insurance specialist can help you determine what your coverage options are.
What You Can Expect in Your Initial Consultation
It is very important to Dr. Correa that his patients understand all aspects of breast asymmetry before making the decision to move forward with surgery. It is his philosophy that his success as a plastic surgeon is dependent not only on his surgical skills but also his ability to fully understand the needs and goals of his patients. By taking the time to understand each patient’s desires, he can ensure they get the treatment or procedure that is truly right for them.
You will have the opportunity to examine photographs of his other patients who have undergone breast asymmetry so you can see his work and know what to expect if you decide to proceed. Dr. Correa will discuss the changes that you can expect to achieve and make recommendations regarding the best surgical methods to use to achieve your goals. You are encouraged to ask many questions and also to share any anxiety you may be having. Attaining your goal is a team effort. You and Dr. Correa must agree on the aesthetics and methods of your surgery so that you can obtain a result that meets or even exceeds your expectations.
What is Involved in Breast Asymmetry Correction Surgery?
Breast asymmetry addresses several issues; breast size or volume, the position of the breasts in relation to each other and the torso, and areola size and position. Each patient has one or more of these problems and the solution involves a holistic approach to the entire torso.
Dr. Correa develops the surgical plan after a thorough examination and after hearing what the patient’s goals are for the surgery. Breast asymmetry correction is a breast augmentation with a twist; it is usually sparked by a need to correct the differences, but the final result is more than correction. It rejuvenates the breast profile by lifting the breast, and increasing or decreasing volume as needed to balance overall appearance.
Deciding on the Goal
First of all, if a patient is happy with one breast, it can be used as the goal for the other breast. That can mean placing a breast implant or performing a breast reduction.
Dr. Correa has found that the cosmetic outcome is usually better if both breasts receive augmentation to ensure consistency in lift and in how the breasts will age over time. For example, in a patient who wants to increase the size of one breast, having implants of different sizes placed in both breasts will create breasts that feel, move and age at the same rate.
Often an implant is performed with a lift, which is called augmentation with lift. Treating one breast with a lift, which tightens underlying muscles, and leaving the other untreated could result in the untreated breast eventually falling lower.
If the breasts are positioned badly but are acceptable in terms of size and shape, a breast lift can be done on both to position them evenly. If there is an issue with size or position of the areola, this can be corrected during the reduction with lift or as a separate surgery if that is the only issue.
