One of the most effective ways to combat the appearance of age in the face is to restore lost volume. Over time the body loses the facial fat that creates round cheeks, fullness under the eyes and contributes to the overall firm appearance of the skin. Restoring that youthful look is now possible without a facelift or any surgical intervention through the skillful application of a facial volumizer called Sculptra. Dr. Bryan Correa points out that while wrinkle fillers such as Juvederm can noticeably reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds, Sculptra actually causes the production of collagen, thus restoring lost fullness over a larger area of the face.
Sculptra is a volumizing product, not simply a wrinkle filler. This difference makes it possible to treat larger areas than would be advisable using a dermal filler. The results are striking and because they happen over time, they are very subtle and natural. If you are interested in receiving Sculptra, or simply want to learn more about this miraculous product, read on for more information.
How does Sculptra work?
Sculptra is a revolutionary product that initially plumps up areas in the face from the water in the injected solution. The active ingredient is poly-L-lactic acid. This is a substance that stimulates the body to produce collagen, the substance that creates youthful contours and fullness in the face. It may take a few weeks to see the effects of Sculptra, but as the body continues to create collagen, you will notice your face becoming more youthful and three-dimensional as the roundness reappears.
Sculptra creates lift by creating underlying volume which then smoothes out deeper folds and wrinkles. A dermal filler will place material in specific areas which reduces the appearance of a wrinkle or fold, not by creating underlying lift. While fillers are very effective in people with specific areas to treat, patients with significant volume loss will achieve better results by treating a larger area of the face.
How safe is it?
Sculptra has been used for over fifteen years in Europe. It received FDA approval in the USA in 2009 for use in cosmetic procedures. Prior to this, the FDA approved Sculptra to add volume to H.I.V. positive patients with facial fat loss. Poly-L-lactic acid is used safely for many medical purposes, such as surgical stitches. Dr. Correa has used Sculptra successfully, with many patients returning for maintenance injections.
Is Sculptra right for me?
Dr. Correa will evaluate your facial structure to determine the best course of treatment. In many cases, a combination of products will achieve the patient’s goals. Sculptra is right for those with significant sagging of the skin and where more volume is needed. It restores volume to hollow areas, such as the temples, cheeks, under the eyes, the chin and the jaw line. Dr. Correa uses Juvederm to restore fullness to the lips and to treat wrinkles, so a combination of Juvederm and Sculptra might be the best option for some patients. Botox can also be used in combination with Sculptra to treat the dynamic horizontal expression lines in the forehead. Dr. Correa also uses Sculptra for patients with facial depressions caused by scarring. Increasing the fullness in the underlying tissues of the skin smoothes out the scar depressions and greatly minimizes the appearance of scars.
Sculptra is not used to treat wrinkles around the lips, but it can lift the corners of the mouth that droop through the loss of lower cheek fullness. It is not recommended in patients that scar easily or have an active skin infection, nor is it used directly around the eyes.
Other facial fillers:
Dr. Correa delivers many different types of fillers. Each filler is best for addressing a certain area of the face. You can learn more about each type and what it addresses by clicking one of the buttons below, or you can visit his facial fillers page.
How long will my treatment last?
Each patient will absorb the active ingredient in Sculptra at a different rate, but some patients enjoy the benefits for up to two years. To maintain the lift created by collagen production, touch up sessions may be recommended. It may require two or three treatments spaced several weeks apart to stimulate the required amount of collagen production in some patients. Dr. Correa evaluates each patient to determine if additional sessions of Sculptra are needed. Patients typically maintain their improved fullness by having maintenance treatments as needed.
One of the major benefits of Sculptra is that it is very long-lasting once the collagen production has been established. Because of this, it is important that the treatment be done by someone highly skilled in Sculptra application as well as facial anatomy. Dr. Correa is skilled plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic facial procedures. His Sculptra patients are delighted in the results they achieve due to his caring attitude as well as his skill as a cosmetic plastic surgeon.
