No one likes looking older than they feel no matter what the calendar says. People are living longer and want their appearance to reflect how they feel on the inside. Choosing the right facial rejuvenation procedure for each patient is the specialty of Houston-based plastic surgeon Dr. Bryan Correa. His patients delight in his artistry and skill as a surgeon which is reflected in their before and after photos.
Facelift represents one of the most complex facial cosmetic surgeries there is. With the possible exception of rhinoplasty, no other operation has a greater number of variables and individual differences between patients than facelift. Because of this, it is essential to choose a surgeon who has a great understanding of the delicacies and intricacies inherent in facelift surgery.
A ‘traditional’ facelift, if there is such a thing, utilizes a well-camouflaged incision to allow for tightening and redraping of the skin and underlying muscle and fascia. The tissue is tightened until the sagging is gone and any loose skin is removed. Sutures are then put in place at the incision site. There are other complementary procedures which are sometimes recommended with a facelift from Dr. Correa, such as fat transfer and neck lift. As a dedicated facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Correa works extensively on the face, and is well-versed in both rhinoplasty and facelift procedures.
A neck lift is typically included in a full facelift. Some people desire a neck lift in isolation. The neck is an area that shows aging by an accumulation of fatty tissue which removes definition from the chin and can give the impression that you are overweight. An incision is made behind the ear allowing the surgeon to remove any excess fat by using liposuction, or a similar method. If needed, a platysmaplasty is done using a small incision under the chin, which is a procedure which separates the skin from the muscles that run vertically down the neck. This removes the ‘neck cord’ look which develops over time. Finally the excess skin is removed and sutures are put in place. In some people a neck lift can be performed alone, but most commonly a face lift and a neck lift will be needed to fully reduce the signs of aging.
Fat transfer is a technique that is used to restore lost fullness in the face and hands. Fat is removed from another part of the patient’s body and purified and transferred to where needed. Since the fat comes from the patient’s body, it is well tolerated. Many dermal fillers can produce a similar effect. I often recommend trying a filler first, which is temporary, to see if it accomplishes the desired look. If successful, it is then recommended that you do a fat transfer, which leads to more *long-lasting results. Fat transfer can be done by itself in mild cases of facial aging, but it can also be combined with a facelift to enhance the results.
What to expect after a facelift
While it will reduce the signs of aging and give you a more youthful appearance, it will not change your basic appearance or stop the aging process. A successful facelift will achieve balance and proportion restoring a naturally youthful look that enhances confidence and well-being.
