Is There Any Scarring With Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty – also known as a nose job – can be performed for functional reasons (a deviated septum, valve collapse, or enlarged turbinates) or for cosmetic reasons. Those who wish to undergo a rhinoplasty procedure for cosmetic reasons often worry if their scarring will be worse than their current nose.

Luckily, most rhinoplasty procedures place the incision in the inside of the nostril – making scarring invisible. In closed, or endonasal, rhinoplasty no external incisions are made whatsoever.

In open rhinoplasty, a tiny incision is made across the columella, typically in the shape of an upside-down “V” or a stairstep. If this incision is created and repaired carefully, the scar should be nearly invisible. A skilled surgeon such as Dr. Correa will ensure your scarring is minimal. There is more potential for visible scarring with open rhinoplasty than with closed rhinoplasty.

Before you undergo rhinoplasty, discuss the after-surgery care with your surgeon. The nose may take weeks to months to heal and it might a year for the before the nose is completely healed. Proper post-op care is essential to reduce any scarring. After the incision is healed and your sutures have been removed, start using a topical scar treatment to reduce scarring as much as possible.

After your rhinoplasty procedure, there are some tips to make your healing process as best as possible. First, clean your incision site. Proper cleansing is important to speed up your healing. Second, control swelling. Warmth and swelling are normal to experience but can be controlled with ice packs. Third, avoid strenuous activity for around four weeks. Avoid exercising, picking up heavy weights, and any activity that may result in nose trauma. Lastly, stay out of the sun. Direct sunlight may darken your scar and make the healing tissue thicker than the surrounding area.
