What is Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction?

Breast Reconstruction after a lumpectomy is a relatively new area in Breast Cancer. In general, it combines breast reduction techniques with Lumpectomy in order to optimize patients outcomes. With how common Breast Reduction and Lumpectomy are, it was only a matter of time before Serendipity allowed these procedures to be combined.

What are the advantages of Oncoplastic Reconstruction?

The basic concept of an Oncoplastic Reconstruction is similar to a Breast Reduction – except that in addition to removing the extra weight and volume that is normally done with a Breast Reduction, the tumor is removed as well, thus accomplishing 2 goals at the same time. There are several roles that an Oncoplastic Reconstruction can play in the setting of lumpectomy, for example:

  • You were considering a Breast Reduction prior to your diagnosis
  • You have a large tumor in a small breast
  • Your Breast Surgeon is concerned about a change to the shape of your breast after removal of the tumor

There are pre-existing breast asymmetries or shape issues which may be made worse after removal of the tumor

Dr. Correa’s philosophy on Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction

“Oncoplastic Breast Reconstruction offers patients a chance to receive significant symptomatic and aesthetic benefits in addition to the standard surgical treatment of their cancer, and offers a significant silver lining to the breast cancer treatment process.”

How to Get Started

Many patients get a referral from their breast surgeon for a plastic surgeon who performs breast reconstruction. However, some patients have undergone their therapy and never had breast reconstruction. Regardless, it is ok to take the initiative and request a consultation directly from Dr. Correa.

Breast reconstruction is a very complex process and it can feel overwhelming to try and figure out what is best for you and what to expect. However, you do not need to do this all on your own and Dr. Correa takes pride in his ability to explain your options in a way that allows you to make your decision with confidence.
