According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is an extremely popular plastic surgery procedure. The latest figures available report that over the last 15 years, breast enhancement has grown by 300%.
Most surgeons require that young women who have not fully matured should wait at least until they are 18 or until their breast size has stabilized prior to considering breast implant surgery. The FDA permits women under age 22 to undergo breast augmentation only with saline implants. Women are not permitted to undergo breast augmentation with silicone implants until they are at least 22 years of age.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the average age of patients who undergo this type of surgery is 34.
Reasons for breast implants:
- Enhance the size and shape of the breasts
- Asymmetrical breasts
- Loss of breast volume due to aging, massive weight loss, or breastfeeding
- Breast cancer reconstruction after treatment
- Revising or repairing previous breast surgeries
One important factor to consider when getting breast implants in addition to physical maturity is emotional maturity. Women, particularly young women, should think about their reasons for wanting breast implants and not make the decision based on outside factors. It is a very personal surgery and women should be 100% sure. Additionally, although breast implants will not affect a woman’s ability to get pregnant or breastfeed, the effects of pregnancy, such as weight gain and stretched skin, can have an adverse effect on results of a breast augmentation.
